Windows 11 KB5121767: Microsoft Fixes Intel Bug Blocking Dell PCs

On July 18, 2026, Microsoft released an out-of-band update to fix an issue related to an Intel driver present on certain Dell PCs. This driver, tied to Intel Innovation Platform Framework (Intel IPF), could cause serious problems on machines where the July 2026 update had been installed. Four days after Patch Tuesday, Microsoft rolled out two fixes, KB5121767 and KB5121768, for these computers.

Intel IPF: why the July update was blocked on Dell PCs

On July 14, 2026, Microsoft released KB5101650, which corresponds to the July 2026 cumulative update for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. Shortly after, a compatibility issue was identified on some Dell computers equipped with an Intel Innovation Platform Framework driver.

To limit the damage, Microsoft simply blocked the patch from being delivered to these computers, temporarily preventing them from receiving the July 2026 security update (KB5101650). The downside is that these PCs were then left without security fixes: a reminder that the July 2026 Patch Tuesday includes 570 vulnerabilities.

According to Microsoft, the driver in question could cause "changes in performance, power consumption, or system behavior" after installing the problematic update. That is not really surprising, since Intel IPF includes technologies such as Intel Dynamic Tuning and Intel Context Sensing, which would explain the impact on power and performance.

KB5121767 and KB5121768: two out-of-band updates

To resolve the issue, Microsoft released two out-of-band updates. These are cumulative updates, so if you have a Dell machine affected by these problems, install the new update released by Microsoft directly.

The Redmond company has therefore made available:

• KB5121767 for Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2. It upgrades the system to build 26200.8894 (25H2) and 26100.8894 (24H2).
• KB5121768 is the hotpatch variant, intended for devices enrolled in hotpatching, including Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024. It corresponds to builds 26200.8893 and 26100.8893.

These updates introduce one single change, allowing installation on Dell machines equipped with the Intel IPF driver.

Should you install this update? It depends. If your machine is not affected by this issue, no action is required. Dell PCs that were previously blocked will now be offered the update.
