Proton Mail Launches Easy Switch to Help You Leave Gmail
Proton Mail wants to attract Gmail users with its new Easy Switch feature, now compatible with Google services. The idea: make it easier to migrate from Gmail to Proton Mail and gradually move away from Google services.
A Bridge Out of the Google Ecosystem
From now on, Proton Mail offers a feature that lets you integrate and use a Gmail account directly from its interface. But this is not about turning it into a multi-provider email client. No, the goal is to make it easier for you to smoothly migrate to Proton services.
Once the connection is established, here is what will happen:
- Proton Mail gives you the option to send messages from your Gmail address directly from Proton.
- Your latest Gmail messages are imported into Proton Mail so you can keep all your conversations in one place.
- New emails received on the Gmail account continue to appear automatically in Proton Mail.
The goal is to let you continue your Gmail conversations through Proton Mail so you can migrate gradually. And when nothing important is left in Gmail, you can disconnect your Gmail account from Proton Mail.

Of course, Proton takes the usual shots at Google (or Microsoft, for that matter) regarding data privacy: "Proton removes trackers, ads, and spam from your messages, giving you greater privacy than Gmail, which is essentially adware.", we can read in the blog post.
How Do You Set Up Easy Switch?
To set up the Easy Switch migration tool, which is being rolled out gradually (if it is not visible on your account yet, it should be soon), here is how to proceed:
- Go to Proton Mail, then open Settings
- Open the "Import via Easy Switch" tab
- Simply connect your Gmail account.

As a reminder, Proton Mail already lets you import your messages from other platforms like Outlook, Yahoo, and Apple Mail using this Easy Switch tool or its import utility.
