Proton Is Developing a Native Proton Drive Client for Linux

Proton is currently working on an official Proton Drive client for Linux, built on a new SDK designed to improve overall performance across all systems. Here’s what we know about this upcoming addition.

A New Proton Drive SDK

To deliver more consistent and reliable performance, Proton has decided to develop a new Drive SDK. It will serve as a shared core component for the Proton Drive client across multiple platforms: Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, and soon Linux.

"Moving to the Proton Drive SDK was like replacing a car engine with a jet engine. It allows us to build Drive apps faster and makes it much easier to develop new features and integrations across all platforms.", Proton says in its blog post.

Most importantly, this new SDK improves Proton Drive's overall performance, including when protecting data stored on your device. Proton explains that newly imported files are still end-to-end encrypted, but the process is now up to 4 times faster.

Faster Transfers for Everyday Use

Beyond encryption improvements, this new SDK will bring more speed across all platforms:

  • Faster transfers: file uploads are up to 3 times faster, making photo backups on Android or file syncing on macOS smoother. Downloads are up to 2 times faster.
  • A more responsive interface: file and photo browsing is faster too. Proton says album loading will be quicker, even with large volumes of data.

As for Linux, Proton dropped the hint subtly: "This also allows us to build more Drive integrations with all our other Proton apps: you'll soon see deeper integrations with the rest of the Proton ecosystem, as well as support for more clients - including, of course, Linux.

Speaking of integrations, the SDK is already being used for the integration of Lumo, Proton's AI assistant, within Drive, notably to act on the user's documents. Finally, developers can take a first look at this SDK on the Proton Drive GitHub.
