Discord to Let Public Server Messages Appear in Search Results

Chat on public Discord servers? Starting in mid-December 2026, some of those messages may appear in search engine results like Google. Discord has decided to open its communities to the web, with default settings that vary by country. Here’s what you need to know.

On October 27, 2026, Discord announced this major change in a blog post signed by Kelsey Duncombe-Smith, Group Product Manager. It applies only to so-called “discoverable” servers, meaning those listed in Discord’s directory and open to anyone without an invite link. To qualify, a server must have at least 1,000 members, be at least eight weeks old, and meet activity and safety requirements (thankfully, otherwise this could have gone off the rails with this new feature). To date, Discord says there are more than 63,000 of them.

Discord’s argument is straightforward: a large share of help forums has moved to its servers, and the answers found there are invisible to search engines. "This has trapped valuable information inside Discord conversations, inaccessible to the rest of the Internet. We want to fix that." Fair enough! The concept has already been tested with the NBA 2K, Rust, and Dead by Daylight communities, but only with administrator and moderator messages.

No surprise here, and I’d even say fortunately, direct messages and group chats are not affected. Private servers are also outside the scope of this change. This decision could also be good news for LLMs, which could feed on the useful information exchanged on these Discord servers. That said, I’m not sure that will be allowed.

A two-step rollout

Here is Discord’s planned roadmap:

  • November 16, 2026: each discoverable server will get a public web page. If it does not already have one, Discord will generate it from the server profile. These pages may also display automatic summaries of conversations, based on exchanges from that date onward.
  • Mid-December 2026: gradual rollout begins for messages themselves, which may start appearing on these pages and in search results. The first messages could take a few weeks to show up while indexing is completed.

Messages sent before mid-December will not be published. Nicknames and avatars will not be displayed, and the affected channels will be labeled to warn members before they post.

In France, it is disabled by default...

The rollout is global, but not everyone is treated the same way, as is often the case! In the European Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil, Australia, and South Korea, message sharing is disabled by default due to legal constraints, according to Discord. Elsewhere, especially in the United States, it’s the opposite: messages will be published unless the user opts out. But this applies only to users considered adults, since teens are fully excluded and will not be able to enable the feature until they reach adulthood. This filtering is based on the age brackets Discord now assigns to each account: I previously covered how Discord’s age verification without ID or selfie works, which was rolled out in September.

The option will be located in user settings; I’m not sure what it will be called in French. But it will be under Data and Privacy, with an option titled "Show my message content from Discoverable channels on web pages". This lets you block message indexing for your Discord account.

However, there are two important caveats:

  • Summaries are not covered by this setting: the option applies only to messages. Automatic summaries, generated separately, will remain visible unless administrators disable them. In France and elsewhere in Europe, summaries will also be published (the exception applies to messages).
  • No retroactive effect: if you turn the option off later, only subsequent messages are protected. Messages posted while the option was enabled will remain visible unless they are deleted from Discord.

For Discord server admins, there will also be settings in the server configuration to manage a server’s presence on the web. For example, this makes it possible to choose which channels are published.
