Proxmox Backup Server 4.2 Released: Key New Features Explained

Proxmox Backup Server has been updated to version 4.2. What new features have been added to this open source backup solution? Here’s what you need to know.

S3 storage as a backup target

Under the hood, Proxmox Backup Server 4.2 is evolving as it will now rely on the Debian 13.4 "Trixie" operating system and Linux kernel 7.0, which became available in mid-April. This release also adds support for the ZFS filesystem in version 2.4.

But let’s talk about what is probably the main new feature in version 4.2: Proxmox Backup Server now supports S3-compatible object storage spaces for storing backups.

Counters will also be added to the datastore summary to provide statistics (including traffic-related counters). S3 storage is therefore a supported feature starting with this release (the preview phase is now over). "This is particularly useful for being alerted when traffic exceeds the expected thresholds.", we read.

Synchronization: security, parallelism, and performance

Synchronization tasks benefit from notable improvements, including:

  • "Push" tasks: they can encrypt snapshots before sending them to a remote datastore.
  • "Pull" tasks: conversely, they are now able to decrypt snapshots that were previously encrypted on a remote datastore.
  • Key management: encryption keys for synchronization and tape are now grouped together and managed from a centralized panel.

On the performance side, synchronization tasks can process multiple groups in parallel thanks to a new property called worker-threads. According to Proxmox, this approach helps improve throughput on high-latency networks.

Proxmox Backup Server 4.2 also brings an improvement that makes it possible to move backup groups and namespaces within the same datastore. This makes it possible to reorganize items without having to recreate them. Finally, note that several bugs and security vulnerabilities have been fixed in this release (including the Crackarmor vulnerabilities).

Proxmox Backup Server 4.2 is now available, سواء for new installations or to update an existing installation (via the APT package manager). All the details about this new release are available on this page.
