OneDrive Is Moving to cloud.microsoft: What You Need to Know
Microsoft continues to unify its cloud services, and OneDrive is now next in line. Starting in July 2026, OneDrive URLs will gradually switch from contoso-my.sharepoint.com to onedrive.cloud.microsoft. Microsoft presents this as a transparent change for users, but what does it really mean for IT teams?
The New SharePoint Access URL
The information comes from the Microsoft 365 Message Center, via message reference MC1392563. Microsoft says OneDrive will adopt the cloud.microsoft domain for its web-accessible URLs. In their preferred browser, users will see addresses such as onedrive.cloud.microsoft instead of contoso-my.sharepoint.com. In fact, this format will still remain active for SharePoint.
The rollout will begin globally in early July 2026, and Microsoft expects to complete it by the end of June 2027. At some point, you will inevitably be moved over, without really knowing exactly when.
This change is part of Microsoft’s strategy to bring access to its services under a single, more easily recognizable domain. If you work with Microsoft tools every day, you already know some addresses in this format:
- teams.microsoft.com for Teams
- outlook.office.com for Outlook
- admin.microsoft.com for Microsoft 365 administration
- security.microsoft.com for security
- compliance.microsoft.com for compliance
Beyond overall consistency, Microsoft is making this change to help users more easily recognize a legitimate Microsoft URL. In other words, this should reduce confusion and therefore lower phishing risks, although that remains to be proven.
In addition, the two domains will coexist indefinitely. Microsoft does not really have much choice if it wants to avoid breaking everything... Existing links, favorites, and bookmarks will continue to work. For home users, nothing changes, as Microsoft insists that consumer OneDrive URLs are not affected at this stage and remain tied to the live.com domain.
For Administrators: What Changes?
OneDrive functionality does not change: file access and data sharing remain the same. But for system administrators, could this URL change have any potential impact to anticipate?
First, note that administration features are not affected by this change. Next, let’s talk about the API. It does not change either: Microsoft specifies that the SharePoint URLs used for file storage and API calls remain the same. Microsoft Graph and other official APIs will therefore continue to work without any adjustments.
The real area to watch is elsewhere: filtering solutions. I encourage you to review:
- The firewall and network filtering rules relying on specific OneDrive domains, in order to allow traffic to
*.cloud.microsoft. - The configuration of your proxy, especially SSL inspection, to properly identify and allow the new addresses.
This is also a good opportunity to update internal documentation and training materials with the new URL format. The impact of this change should be limited, but it is still better to anticipate it: the risk does not come from OneDrive itself.
