Nextcloud Brings Euro-Office to Windows, Linux, and macOS
Euro-Office is moving beyond the browser and heading straight to your operating system. Nextcloud has just announced a desktop app for Windows, Linux, and macOS, with the goal of getting a little closer to the experience offered by Microsoft Office. Here is what we know about this app, which is not yet available.
As a reminder, Euro-Office is an open source office suite (documents, spreadsheets, presentations) unveiled in late March 2026 in Berlin by a consortium of European players led by IONOS and Nextcloud. This was not a ground-up development: it is a fork of ONLYOFFICE, distributed under the AGPLv3 license. The launch was also rocky, since ONLYOFFICE quickly accused Euro-Office of violating its open source license.
Since the release of the first stable version in June 2026, Euro-Office had one major limitation: everything ran in the browser. As I explained in my full article on Euro-Office, its license dispute, and its installation, the suite does not work on its own. It plugs into a host platform such as Nextcloud or Sync-in.
Then, recently, Nextcloud put a new version of its platform online: Nextcloud Hub 26. On this occasion, the German vendor placed one new feature at the center of this release: the Euro-Office desktop client.
A Windows App Connected to Nextcloud
No surprise here, the Euro-Office desktop client is connected to Nextcloud. Here is what we know about it:
- Supported platforms: the app is planned for Windows (x64 and Arm64), Linux (x64 and Arm64), and macOS on arm64, meaning Macs equipped with an Apple Silicon chip. Intel Macs are not mentioned.
- Local editing: the client lets you edit files locally, then save changes to the server or to the machine.
- Co-editing: once the app is connected to a Nextcloud instance, you can open a file from the desktop client and other users can join the editing session from their own desktop client or from the browser.
"With the Euro-Office desktop app, we offer individuals and organizations a real, sovereign alternative to Microsoft Office, not only in the browser, but exactly where many of them still work every day: on their own computer.", said Frank Karlitschek, CEO and founder of Nextcloud.
No Download Yet, and the Shadow of ONLYOFFICE
Even though Nextcloud Hub 26 Summer is available now, the same is not true for the Euro-Office app. It will be offered for download "in the coming weeks", according to the press release. No exact date has been given. You can keep an eye on the project’s desktop-apps GitHub repository.
That brings us to an important question: did Nextcloud build this desktop app from scratch, described as a Desktop Editors capable of working offline and connecting to Nextcloud, ownCloud, or Seafile. And then, the repository shows more than 7,400 commits. For a project born in March, that is, how should we put it, a lot... In reality, like the server side, this desktop client would rely on ONLYOFFICE desktop editors. Even if Nextcloud does not say so in its announcements, there is a good chance that is the case.
