Windows 11 KB5127648: What You Need to Know About the October 2026 Update
October 2026 Patch Tuesday fixes several bugs on Windows 11, including some particularly annoying ones in enterprise environments, such as the black screen issue on Azure Virtual Desktop and the Always On VPN bug. Oh, and let's not forget that this update is also the last one for some editions of Windows 11 24H2. Here's what you need to know about update KB5127648.
On Tuesday, October 13, 2026, Microsoft released the October 2026 monthly cumulative updates for Windows 11. They are considered mandatory and will be offered through Windows Update. More importantly, they are tied to a Patch Tuesday that fixes more than 1,400 vulnerabilities (a record). Here are the KBs to watch depending on your version:
- Windows 11 26H2, 25H2 and 24H2: KB5127648, with builds 26300.9711, 26200.9711 and 26100.9711
- Windows 11 26H1: KB5127646, with build 28000.3231
- Windows 11 23H2: KB5126653, with build 22621.7652
KB5127648 also marks the end for Windows 11 24H2: "Windows 11, version 24H2 Home and Pro has reached end of updates", as the release notes state. However, Enterprise and Education editions remain supported until October 12, 2027. As for Windows 11 23H2, it is specifically the Enterprise and Education editions that are reaching end of life: the November 10, 2026 update will be the last one.
KB5124010 features are now rolling out to everyone
KB5127648 includes the content of the optional update KB5124010 released on September 22, 2026. Among the new features introduced by that update was the return of file preview for downloaded files in File Explorer. So, if we want a quick full recap, it looks like this:
- File Explorer: PDFs downloaded from the Internet are once again automatically previewed, while HTML files get a Preview anyway button. This restores behavior that is closer to what we had a few years ago (users will be happy).
- Copilot key: it can be remapped to the right Ctrl key or to the context menu key.
- Accessibility: the Open magnified apps setting opens windows directly in full screen.
- Kiosk mode: the Windows + Tab, Windows + A and Windows + C shortcuts are disabled depending on the kiosk type.
- PC-to-PC migration: this feature is removed in favor of Microsoft’s Windows Backup app.
As usual, some of these features are being rolled out gradually, so they may not be visible right after installation.
Black screen, VPN, Dolby Digital: the fixes you should know about
This update also fixes several bugs, and there was certainly plenty to address: the September 2026 updates caused quite a mess. Let’s hope things are calmer this month... In the meantime, here are the fixed issues:
- Windows Explorer: in multi-user environments such as Azure Virtual Desktop and FSLogix, the
explorer.exeprocess could fail to start or crash repeatedly after sign-in, resulting in a black screen. - AC-3 audio: I told you last week about KB5124010 causing crashes in games and applications using Dolby Digital. That is now fixed.
- Always On VPN: since KB5124008, connections configured with automatic protocol selection could get stuck while connecting. The workaround I published for the Always On VPN issue caused by the September updates is no longer needed.
- Storage Spaces Direct: some tiered virtual disks could fail to come online, making clustered workloads unavailable.
- Printing: printing could fail with RAW or Generic Text Only drivers since the August 2026 update.
- Games and Windows Hello: Microsoft fixes mouse stuttering in some games, as well as fingerprint sign-in after a full restart.
As with Windows 10, Microsoft has also introduced a new auditing capability, enabled by default, for ReFS volumes located on external storage devices. A tightening of restrictions is planned next, with these devices being blocked (as indicated by KB5130741). You can still adjust this behavior through the Registry if needed (RefsRemovableDeviceMountPolicy).
And, as with Windows 10 too, one known issue remains unresolved: some USB Audio Class 1.0 devices may show Code 10 or produce no sound at all.

Before I leave you with a few links, let me end with this information provided by Microsoft: "If you deploy dynamic updates, such as this one, to an existing Windows image, make sure the boot.stl file is included on the installation media. If this file is not included, devices may fail to boot properly from the installation media, which may result in error code 0xc0430001."
